I’m often surprised how my vocabulary feels, at turns, larger enough to serve me and shrinking at an astounding rate. But sometimes I surprise myself.

Let’s see if you can surprise yourself.

    First, pick a letter.

Then, set a timer for two minutes (use an actual timer) and list every word you can think of that begins with the letter you chose. It doesn’t matter how big or small the words are; just list all of them.

When you’re done, read your words out loud. Feel each of them in your mouth.

By some process of divination and preference, pick a word to play with.

As you write today, dissect the word. What does it mean? What does it feel? How is it used? By who? What is it associated with? Where does it live? How does it smell? Cut it open; does it have a tumor? A heart? Go to its house? Is it big? Does it live alone?Get to know the word.
