The More Mothers Project

First, thank you. Seriously and repeatedly, thank you.

Okay, so here’s what I envision: a multi-voiced performance of my poem “I Wish I was More Mothers” that uses your recordings, edited together. To participate, you don't have to be a parent or ever want to be a parent.

I’m not a professional editor and I’m guessing most of you aren’t professional camera people so I want make this as clear as possible so it’s easy for all of us. (I'm including a partial recording of me reading the poem so you can get a feel for what I'm looking for.)

Basically, you record yourself using what you have at your disposal (phone is preferable, but a tablet would work.)

In more detail, aim to get a well-lit shot of yourself (meaning your torso) with a bit of head room above you. You should shoot it in landscape.

Choose a background that is significant to you in terms of the content of the poem or your feelings in general about (not) parenting.

Minimize background noise.  By that I mean, kill the AC, don't record in front of a refrigerator, or on a subway platform, etc.  A bit of background noise (birds chirping) would be cool, but consistent hum would not.

Speak slowly. I’m not an editor and so my technical skills are that of an amateur, an enthusiastic amateur, but an amateur. Speaking slowly will help me be able to cut and edit and quilt us all together in a way that makes sense and (hopefully) sounds good. I recorded a video of me reading it so you can get an idea of (editable) pacing.

Send it to me by January 15th. The easiest way to do that is to use (it's free!). Include your name in the email so I know how you want to be credited. My email is

Lastly, thank you. Seriously and repeatedly, thank you.

Here's the text of the poem:

Below is a video that demonstrates all the stuff above.

Here's me reading it in full with one of my nerdlings:
